In February 2004, the combination of an armed uprising of Haitian rebels and international pressure forced President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to flee the country of Haiti. A rebel group seized control of Haiti's fourth-largest city, Gonaïves, marking the start of a major revolt against Aristide. By the time February approached, rebels had advanced within miles of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
